Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Puma was not mistreated

Regarding Paul Scrivano’s Dec. 24 letter—if the wildlife people do nothing, the pumas will eventually be extinct in the Santa Monica Mountains. If P-22 was treated so badly, why did he live to be a very old puma? Once a dart takes effect, a cat will remember nothing till he wakes up, so spare us the histrionics. The slight pain […]

Gender can’t be tested, examined

How interesting that Robert Gary should conclude his Dec. 17 letter with “Religious beliefs should not be imposed by law” when the belief system of “gender” is being rammed down our throats by decree and law. The entire concepts of “male” and “female” exist only and solely because of the biology of sexual reproduction. (The terms may be applied elsewhere, […]

Agencies did right by P-22

I disagree with Mr. Scrivano’s allegation that agencies did wrong by P-22 (Letters, Dec. 23). P-22’s health was evaluated by veterinarians from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and additionally by a team of doctors at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. They conducted a CT scan on P-22, and the veterinarians identified a long list of serious health […]

Santa Rosa pickleballer goes pro

Daniel Mcauly doesn’t find himself in a pickle often. When he does, it’s usually on the court. He’s a pro pickleball player. The ever-evolving sport, played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes, combines elements of tennis, pingpong and badminton. It was invented in 1965 and, over the past decade, has begun to explode in popularity because it’s […]

Hatchet man: WLV resident sharpens his throwing skills

He’s aiming for the top 10 in 2023

Some of the foremost ax-throwers in the nation can be found in Southern California— and Westlake Village resident Neil Rust is aiming for the throne next year. Rust recently competed in the World Axe Throwing Championship in Appleton, Wisconsin, which concluded Dec. 4. It did not go as hoped for Rust, who represents the Mighty Axe, an ax-throwing business in […]

Area ham radio operators signal readiness

Skywarn Recognition Day was observed Dec. 3 at National Weather Service locations across the United States. Amateur ham radio volunteers set up temporary operations from forecasting headquarters and made contacts with other stations to demonstrate their readiness to operate in emergency conditions and to act as observers for the weather service. Locally, operations were conducted at the Los Angeles area […]

Woman finds a home in RAIN

For the first time in 16 years, Morgan Maginnis will soon have a place of her own to call home. She credits the life she has built for her 1-year-old son to her own perseverance as well as RAIN Communities—a Camarillo based nonprofit that partners with the county to provide services and shelter for individuals and families who don’t have […]
