Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

The importance of credibility

I have read with interest the articles and letters in the Acorn about Congressman Elton Gallegly taking Cal Lutheran University to court. CLU has been and continues to be an important part of our community and the region. Unfortunately, the lawsuit reveals that something has gone terribly wrong at CLU. I’m appalled that legal action would be required to hold […]

Questions about food waste rules

The new food waste situation is confusing me. We are advised to put our food waste in used plastic bags such as those we pay 10 cents for at the grocery stores and dispose of them in the yard waste bin. In other advisements, we’re told not to put any plastic in the yard waste bin as this pollutes the […]

After Jan. 6, ‘fed up’ with GOP

This is a copy of a letter I emailed to Republican Chair Jessica Patterson about her comments in the Dec 31 Camarillo Acorn article about the new redistricting maps: I’ve been reading articles in the news about the political landscape shifts due to recent revision. I live in the Ventura County 26th Congressional District and 42nd Assembly District. I disagree […]

Ventura Boulevard, the 1700 block of Jose Avenue and the 1200 block of Flynn Road. According to a Dec. 27 report, a 50-year-old man […]

Program to make transitional kindergarten available to all 4-year-olds

Teachers say it better prepares kids for K-5 classes

Pleasant Valley School District officials are trying a new strategy to get parents interested in enrolling their children in transitional kindergarten as a new state law expands eligibility to all 4-year-olds. In past years, the TK-8 district has held informational meetings at school campuses, but now officials are taking a districtwide approach to educating parents about enrollment opportunities for the […]

In-person visits suspended at jails

In response to COVID-19 outbreaks at its jails, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has temporarily suspended in-person visits and is quarantining all inmates. “The jail is a microcosm of society,” Cmdr. Mike Hartmann told the Acorn. “This increase in COVID is not unexpected.” Typically, Hartmann said, the sheriff’s office sees only a few positive cases per week, but that number […]

Pet of the week

LIVELY—Thor is a sweet, happy boy who is happiest chewing on a tennis ball. He knows some basic commands like sit, down and off, and he is easy to bathe. His previous owners reported that he didn’t get along with other dogs and cats, and that he did well with kids but can get excited when he’s playing and may […]
