Trio of OUHSD incumbents in front, according to early numbers

Three incumbents vying to hold onto their school board seats in Oxnard Union High School District were leading in early voting Tuesday against their two challengers.

With 55 percent of precincts reporting, incumbents Wayne Edmunds, Beatriz Herrera and Karen Sher were leading against challengers Matt Vaca Sams and Alfredo Varela.

As of 10 p.m., Herrera had received 26 percent of the vote, followed by Sher with 25 percent and Edmunds with 24 percent, early voting results showed.

Avila, a high school teacher, received 15 percent of the vote, while Vaca Sams, a parks maintenance worker, received 7 percent of the vote, with 41 precincts reporting.

“I’m excited,” Edmunds, who was first elected in 2010, said around 10 p.m. Tuesday night. “I think we’ve accomplished a lot in the last couple of years working to improve education for our students.”

He said he looked forward to the construction of a new high school in Oxnard with funds from the Measure A bond, a promise the board made to voters.
