Schools receive a summer makeover courtesy of Measure C

Around $4.2 million in Measure C projects were completed at various Pleasant Valley School District campuses recently—just in time for students’ first day of school in August.

“An enormous amount of work was completed this summer,” Chris Johnston, assistant superintendent of business services, said during the Sept. 15 school board meeting.

Among the projects were new playgrounds, an outdoor classroom and fresh coats of paint.

Measure C was approved by Camarillo voters in 2018. The eight-year bond provides roughly $119 million for campus upgrades.

“It’s a good time to thank the community for passing that bond. . . .” trustee Pat FitzGerald said. “This has allowed us to bring our schools into the 21st century.”

Over $2 million was spent this summer at Pleasant Valley School of Engineering and Arts, 700 Temple Ave.

Most expensive among the improvements were changes to the parking lot of the campus’ early education center, where a drop-off/pickup lane was added to improve traffic flow.

The district also upgraded covered walkways and installed new playground equipment at the school. The exteriors of both the early education center and the main campus were refurbished.

Two projects, totaling around $573,000, were wrapped up at La Mariposa Elementary School. The campus has new playground equipment and a new outdoor classroom.

Las Colinas Middle School underwent the first phase of a roof replacement project, which cost just over $700,000.

Camarillo Heights STEM Academy has an upgraded parking lot, which cost around $352,000. The changes addressed Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.

The exterior at Dos Caminos Elementary School was refurbished for $260,000.

The district built an outdoor learning center at University Preparation Charter School CSU Channel Islands. The project cost about $127,000.

Replacing asphalt at Tierra Linda Elementary School accounted for $85,000.

Johnston said several projects are not yet complete, including a playground at Santa Rosa Technology Magnet School.

District staff are planning next summer’s Measure C projects, and the board is expected to approve several at next month’s meeting.

“I expect another enormously busy summer in the year ahead,” Johnston told trustees.
