One killed in Oxnard plane crash

One person was killed when a small plane struck a building south of the 101 Freeway and crashed in an Oxnard strawberry field near the northbound lanes of the 101 at the Del Norte Boulevard exit the morning of June 10, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

The Ventura County medical examiner’s office identified the victim as James G. Abraham, a 68-year-old Phoenix resident.

The crash occurred around 8:20 a.m. June 10, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA said the plane had just taken off from Camarillo Airport and was returning to Phoenix.

When firefighters arrived after receiving 911 calls reporting smoke, the plane was still on fire, said Firefighter Andy Van- Sciver, a spokesperson for the department. The fire was put out with the help of the Oxnard Fire Department.

The fixed-wing, single-engine Mooney plane could seat up to four people, VanSciver said.

He said the department used a helicopter as well as two search and rescue dogs to look for additional victims but found none. Debris from the plane was found on the roof of a building.

The cause of the crash has not been determined, but VanSciver said there was a heavy marine layer of fog last Friday morning and visibility may have been an issue.

The crash is still under investigation by flight officials.
