Student’s award is newsworthy

SHE EXCELS—Sophia Valencia, center, a former fifth-grade student at Camarillo Heights Science Technology Engineering and Math Academy, received the Youth We Appreciate Award from the Camarillo Noontime Optimist Club on April 24 at a luncheon ceremony in Camarillo. Jennifer Paterson, Sophia’s teacher, left, said Sophia excelled in all curriculum areas and was a constant role model for the school’s Junior Optimist Club. Paterson said Sophia served on the school’s news crew and produced a weekly news video. As part of her club activities, she helped in the annual holiday food drive and worked with senior citizens during Thanksgiving. Also pictured is Camarillo Heights’ Principal Claudia Stepan.
