Grad earns fellowship

Cal State Channel Islands graduate Marisol Luis has been named a 2017 Newman Civic Fellow, one of only 273 students nationwide awarded the honor.

Offered by the Boston-based nonprofit Campus Compact, the fellowship is a one-year program that provides students with access to in-person and virtual learning opportunities, networking events and mentoring, according to Campus Compact’s website.

Luis, whose commencement took place May 20, plans to attend graduate school and earn a doctorate degree in stem cell research.

She is the first in her family to attend college.

Luis became a mentor for migrant and African American high school students. She also volunteered at a hospital in Mumbai, India.
