Gorell to be grand marshall in parade
Former assemblyman and Afghanistan War veteran Jeff Gorell will serve as Grand Marshal of the annual Ventura County St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sat., March 14, beginning at 10 a.m. at Mission San Buenaventura. in downtown Ventura.
Presented by Ventura Elks Lodge No. 1430, this year’s parade will have the theme “Honoring Our Troops.”
The event will feature floats sponsored by civic groups, nonprofits, local businesses and restaurants; marching bands; car clubs; horses; clowns; the Biggest Green Pig in the World; and high school pep bands and youth and adult groups.
Gorell spent less than three months in office before becoming the first sitting California lawmaker since World War II to be called into active military duty overseas. During his deployment, 14 bills were sponsored in his name.
He later served as vice chairman of the Assembly Budget Committee and now serves as Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve.
