Pharmacist makes medicine personal

By Christy Fenner

Dr. Jasmine Razeghi is a pharmacist who doesn’t believe “one size fits all” when it comes to taking medication.

Razeghi’s new pharmacy, Seena Pharmacy in Camarillo, uses a process called compounding to put prescription medication into items such as creams, lozenges and liquids—even lollipops—to make it easier for patients to take.

Razeghi can recommend a form of medication that will meet the patient’s needs while treating the condition.

“It is apothecary, old-style, the fact that you can personalize a dose,” Razeghi said. “Compounding lets you take full advantage of the properties of different drugs and use them in a nonconventional way.”

Seena Pharmacy can create doses of medicine that typically don’t come from the manufacturer, which allows the pharmacist to tailor a dose for any body size—especially convenient when it comes to giving medicine to children.

“We are using the technology and new data we have now and applying it to the old style we knew worked and taking the best of both worlds and mixing it,” Razeghi said.

Many patients don’t finish all their medication because of the taste or a side-effect, she said.

“When you can specialize the medication to the patient’s need, you increase their compliance,” Razeghi said. “They will take their medication and finish their course of therapy.”

Razeghi’s customized approach to her patients and their medications allows her to be more involved in their care.

Because her pharmacy is not a nationwide chain, she said, she’s able to sit down with patients and discuss their medications, which is important for those with chronic conditions such as diabetes.

She also works with the doctor to ensure that the drugs are what’s best for the patient.

“You are not just a number; you are a patient,” Razeghi said. “ I know what you are taking, what works for you, what doesn’t.

“I am going to know you better than a pharmacist who sees 5,000 patients.”

Seena Pharmacy is at 3901 Las Posas Road, Ste. 101.
