Harry Potter club takes flight

A Harry Potter club has started up at Rio Mesa High School.

Students and teachers had their first practice in Quidditch, the sport imagined by Potter author J.K. Rowling, on Feb. 11 at Lokker Park in Camarillo. The students “flew” on their broomsticks while chasing “quaffles” to score goals.

The club has grown enough to field four Quidditch teams: Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin and Gryffindor.

The club advisor is Binney, a RMHS math teacher.

Quidditch teams have started at colleges and universities throughout the world, including UCLA and UC Berkeley, but this is one of the first Quidditch clubs at a Ventura County high school.
