Teacher appreciation


SALUTING AN EDUCATOR— Las Posas Elementary School third-grade  teacher  Debbie Maki, second from right, was named Teacher of the Year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars local  post  11395  during  a ceremony  at  the  Camarillo school on Oct. 2. For the last two  years  Maki  has  encouraged  students  to  visit  and write  letters  to  patients  at  a California  veterans  hospital. Maki’s  father,  Jack  Carter, right,  was  on  hand  for  the awards presentation. Carter is a member of  the  local VFW post. Henry Papeika, left, and Berle  Spurlock,  both VFW members, also took part in the presentation. Maki is eligible to win  the  statewide Teacher of the  Year  award  from  the veterans organization.
