      The Camarillo City Council generally meets the second and fourth Wednesday of every month at 5 p.m. at city hall. Meetings are telecast live on Time Warner Channel 10 in Camarillo. The city’s planning commission meets on the first and third Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. with live telecasts airing on Channel 10 in Camarillo

Cheering, having fun at fair
      Two Camarillo families participated in the AIM (Athletes in Motion) Cheer and Dance Competition at the Ventura County Fair on Aug. 8. Lorelei Larson, daughter of Terry and Amanda Larson, and Faith Masyr, daughter of Evan and Christy Masyr, took part in the contest. Both girls are 4 years old.

      The MakeAWish Foundation grants the wishes of children with lifethreatening medical conditions and is always in need of certain types of toys used as “first gifts” when meeting Wish Children and at Wish Presentation Parties.

CHP celebrates 80 years
Camarillo resident commands area station
      For 80 years the California Highway Patrol has regulated traffic on county and state highways, provided disaster and lifesaving assistance, and protected state buildings. On Aug. 14, the CHP officially marked its eighth decade in existence.

Police to set DUI checkpoints
      Law enforcement officials in Ventura County will begin a crackdown on drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs. All 14 departments cooperating under the Avoid the 14 banner will send officers to a DUI task force operation on Highway 101 on Sat., Aug. 29.

Man sentenced for possessing child pornography
Material viewed at library and in his home, police say
      Richard Gene Ballard, 58, of Camarillo was sentenced to two years in prison for possessing child pornography in the Camarillo Library and his home last year. The court also ordered Ballard to register as a sex offender.

      A resident of the unincorporated area of Camarillo was attacked in his home during a burglary earlier this month.

Mountain lion spotted in Calleguas Creek bed
      A woman reported seeing a mountain lion the morning of Aug. 13 in the Calleguas Creek wash area between Upland and Creekside roads. Camarillo police officers checked the area but did not find the animal. Authorities with the Department of Fish and Game and Ventura County Animal Control were notified.

Boys & Girls Club receives federal money for young job seekers
      Federal stimulus dollars placed 17 disadvantaged Camarillo youths in summer jobs this week. The cityrun Youth Employment Services and Camarillo’s Boys & Girls Club teamed up a couple of months ago to apply for a federal stimulus grant that pays for the club to hire 20 disadvantaged youths ages 14 to 18. The club has hired 17 so far.

Chili cook-off needs contestants
      The inaugural Camarillo Hospice Country Music Festival and Chili Cook-off will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Sun., Sept. 6 at the Camarillo Ranch, 201 Camarillo Ranch Road. Openings for cooks are available in the red chili and chili verde categories in the International Chili Society competition.

     THEY’VE GOT SPIRIT—The Adolfo Camarillo High School Cheer Squad returned from a weeklong cheer camp at UCLA earlier this month with a number of awards in hand.

Film fest
      The Camarillo Community Theatre will sponsor its inaugural film festival at 7 p.m. Sun., Aug. 30 at the theater, 330 Skyway Drive, inside the airport. The festival will showcase budding writers in the county with short movies written, produced and directed by local artists.
