CHP arrests suspected drunk driver with alleged homemade explosive
The California Highway Patrol arrested a suspect for driving under the influence and for possession of an explosive device on a public highway at approximately 8:23 p.m. June 1 on Santa Clara Avenue at Ventura Boulevard in Camarillo.
Just before 8 p.m., according to police reports, the Ventura CHP received calls of a possible DUI driver who was heading north on the 101 Freeway in the Camarillo area.
CHP Officer Robert Smith located the vehicle, which was traveling northbound on the freeway near Del Norte Boulevard. Smith stopped the vehicle off the freeway on Santa Clara Avenue.
The driver, later identified as James Thomas Jacquez, 41, was arrested for driving under the influence and booked into the Ventura County Jail.
Following the arrest, the vehicle was checked and Smith found an object under the driver's seat which he believed to be an explosive device.
The Ventura County Sheriff's Bomb and Arson unit was called to the scene to inspect the device.
The roadway was closed for more than one hour while the device was removed from the vehicle and disarmed.
The object proved to be a homemade bomb and was taken for disposal.
The incident is still under investigation by the CHP.
