      Danna Lomax and Kimberley Papenhausen, teachers at the University Charter School at California State University Channel Islands, earned the top awards at the 17th annual Impact II teacher recognition dinner held recently at the Courtyard Marriott in Oxnard.

Actors pull fairy tale from trunk
      Channel Islands Harbor presents Gypsies in a Trunk, the allvolunteer troupe of actors who perform free fairy tales for the young and the young at heart. The troupe will perform "Pinocchio" at 2 p.m., Sun., June 7 at the north end of Harbor View Park, adjacent to Marine Emporium Landing and the Farmers Market in Ventura.

Frontier students complete law academy
     FUTURE OFFICERS?—Five Frontier High School students recently completed the Spring Law Academy, a program put on by the Oxnard Union High School District in conjunction with the Oxnard Police Department that gives teens a firsthand look at police work. Students attend a 10-week program that covers community and police issues, including local government, crime scene investigation and drug enforcement. This year's graduates of the program include, from left, Chris Cortez, Angel Diaz, Everardo Lopez, Miguel Ortiz and Jose Celedon. The young men are joined by assistant police chief Jason Benites.

Camarillo residents among scholarship recipients
      A record number of scholarships will be awarded to local students at the Ventura County Community Foundation Scholarship Awards Reception at the Ventura County Office of Education on June 4. Nearly 380 awards, totaling more than $1.35 million, will be handed out at the event. A total of 490 scholarships will be given to 383 individuals.

OUHSD course could influence others
      Oxnard Union High School District's new course of study could be a trailblazer for high schools throughout the state. The school board approved the community service course as a districtwide elective on May 13. Oxnard Union students will receive five credits when they perform 60 hours of volunteer service for a community organization.
