IRIS SMOOT/Acorn Newspapers EXPERIMENT—University Preparation School at CSU Channel Islands student Mikaela Hunter, 7, does a science experiment in the new science and technology center at the Camarillo charter school. Following last week's ribbon-cutting ceremony, students and their families could explore the lab and test some of the new equipment. The center was made possible by recent grants, including one for $20,000 from Monsanto, a Missouri-based agricultural firm that has offices in Ventura County. Local politicians and educators are planning their next steps following Tuesday's defeat of five of six ballot propositions that were intended to reduce the state's budget deficit. FRIENDS FOR A CURE—Employees of Keller Williams Realty of Camarillo participated in the 16th annual REVLON Run/Walk for Women in Los Angeles on May 9. The 5K walk draws an estimated 60,000 people and raises money for cancer research. This was the second year team "Keller Williams and Friends for a Cure" has participated in the fundraiser, and this year the team rallied around Carolyn Taylor, at right, wife of realty agent Bob Taylor, second from right. In February, Carolyn was diagnosed with cancer and in April had major surgery. Doctors removed three ribs, her diaphragm wall, chest lining, cartilage and half a lung. SCIENTIFIC-MINDED— Julius Acero, a student at Cornerstone Christian School, won the Association of Christian Schools International District Science Fair in the physical science category April 3. ACSI held the junior and senior high school regional science fair at Biola University in La Mirada, Calif. Acero won for his project "Making a Homemade Fuel: A Study of Ethanol." The Camarillo private school was one of 44 Christian schools to compete in the contest. Threats fly in two recent incidents
It's the people, not the dogs, who are nipping at each other at Camarillo's only dog park. Two large signs at Camarillo Grove Park—one at the entrance, the other near the restrooms—inform visitors to the city's eastside park that dogs are allowed offleash during the week. More...
