Keeping prom safe

Camarillo High School parents will host an After Prom Party for high school seniors and their dates and friends from midnight to 5 a.m. Sun., May 17 at the Roxy Theatres.

This is the 17th year the school has sponsored a Safe and Sober party to avoid other allnight alternatives.

The party will have games, a hypnotist, casino tables, allyoucaneat food bar and surprise activities. Every senior will go home with a prize.

The theme is "A Night for the 2009 Stars."

Anderson accepted to academy camp

Derek Anderson, a student of Monte Vista Middle School in Camarillo, will participate in the U.S. Naval Academy's summer STEM Program.

The program is an overnight academy camp for seventh- through ninth-graders in good academic standing who have an interest in math and science.

The camp allows students to experience real-life applications of math and science principles through handson practical learning. Students learn from academy professors in world-class lab facilities.

Derek, 12, is a member of the U.S. Navy Sea Cadet Corps/Navy League Cadet Corps Minutemen stationed at Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu.

About 200 students from across the U.S. will take part in the camp.

World Party Day at University Prep

University Preparation School PTSA will host a World Party Day Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sat., May 16 at the school, 500 Temple Ave., Camarillo.

The public is invited. The festival will have food, family activities and live "world" entertainment.

The event is a fundraiser to support classroom supplies, curriculum, programs and educational experiences for the school.

University Preparation School and University Charter Middle School at Cal State Channel Islands are charter schools with diverse student populations from across Ventura County. Senior named Merit Scholar

Timothy Foreman, a senior at Adolfo Camarillo High School, was recently named a National Merit Scholar. He will receive a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship.

Foreman is considering a career in chemical engineering.

He is one of 2,500 distinguished high school seniors chosen by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The scholars may use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university. Sign up for Scouts

Cub Scout Pack No. 3858 will host a recruitment for new Scouts for boys in grades one through five from 6 to 7 p.m. Fri., May 15 in the multipurpose room at Dos Caminos Elementary School, 3635 Appian Way, Camarillo.

The regular meeting will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and visitors are welcome.
