EXCELLENT SPEAKERS—Frontier High School students competed in the seventh annual Migrant Education Invitational Speech and Debate tournament at Oxnard High School on May 2. The event included more than 900 students from fifth-graders to high school seniors who come from as far as Monterey, Calif. The Camarillo Explorer Post No. 2932 recently recognized five members who have achieved the Presidential Volunteer Gold Service Award, the highest level of the President's Volunteer Service Award. Explorers Andrew Behan, Armand Castanon, Hannah Wallin, Ian Agar and Taylor Soares, the award winners, have each volunteered more than 250 hours of service in 2008. More ... County health officials announced earlier this week that 10 cases of swine flu have been confirmed in Ventura County. According to Dr. Robert Levin, head of the Ventura County Department of Public Health, the county's three most recent cases include two Oxnard residents—a teenager and a toddler—and a Simi Valley man in his 30s. CHAMPS—The Adolfo Camarillo High School Winter Guard, shown above, brought home the gold medal in the RA orange division comprised of 13 schools, receiving the highest score (87.4) of all 68 schools competing at the 2009 Winter Guard Association of Southern California's Regional A Championships at San Juan Hills High School in Orange County, Calif. on April 18. The teams perform acrobatic dance routines that incorporate flags, rifles and sabers. Locally the camp takes place on the campuses of UCLA, Pepperdine University, California Lutheran University, UC Irvine and UC San Diego. More ... EDUCATION—Las Posas Elementary School fourth-grader Jakhiyah Wooten, 9, was part of three classes of Las Posas students who spent the day at Ventura College on April 24 to learn about college courses. The students were given lessons in math and science. The trip was paid for with a grant from Minnesota-based retail giant Target applied for by fourth-grade teacher Lisa Sage. The field trip was intended to inspire the students to strive to attend college. More ... Camarillo High School parents will host an After Prom Party for high school seniors and their dates and friends from midnight to 5 a.m. Sun., May 17 at the Roxy Theatres.
