Charity works to make wishes come true
      Like other charities hit by the recession, MakeAWish Foundation of the Tri-Counties needs more donations. While cash donations would be nice, the nonprofit would rather have items such as toys, iPods and electronic games.

Kurman called to the Torah
     BECOMING A YOUNG WOMAN—Tari Kurman, right, is joined by her mother, Cheri Kurman, at Temple Ner Ami in Camarillo. Tari read from the Torah during her bat mitzvah ceremony, a Jewish right of passage for 13-year-olds, on April 25. Tari was also joined by her father, Alec Kurman. Student Rabbi Lisa Bock led the ceremony. Tari's mitzvah project was to collect blankets, towels and comforters for Operation Blankets of Love, an organization that provides aid to animals in shelters. Tari, who attends Los Primeros School of Science and Arts, wants to be a veterinarian. Mazel tov, Tari!

Exhibit to honor women
      About 25 women who contributed to the war effort in World War II will be honored Sat., May 9 at the Commemorative Air Force Aviation Museum in the Camarillo Airport, Skyway Drive. The public is invited. The event begins at 10 a.m. with displays of antique cars and vintage aircraft, docent-led tours, movies and exhibits.
