Cougars roar into first place
     DISNEY-BOUND—The Camarillo Cougars cheerleading team won first place in their division during a statewide cheerleading competition in Temecula, Calif., late last month. The team has qualified for the USA Jr. Spirit Nationals competition at Disney's California Adventure Park in Anaheim, Calif., on Feb. 28. Lions on prowl for student speakers
      The Pleasant Valley/Somis Lions Club wants to pay students to speak but is having a tough time finding participants. Lions clubs statewide sponsor an annual speech contest in January or February. The club winner goes on to compete against other club winners and eventually can advance to the state level and earn $250 in cash and about $21,000 in college scholarships.

Fundraiser for RMHS
      Rio Mesa High School Music and Pageantry Boosters will hold a Valentine's Sweetheart Dance and Casino Night fundraiser from 6 p.m. to midnight Fri., Feb. 20 at Casa Lopez, 325 S. "A" St., Oxnard.

Application update
      It's official. The University of California received a record number of applications for fall 2009. Almost 127,000 students applied for admission, an increase of nearly 5 percent over last year. Freshman applications are up 3 percent, and transfer applications are up 11 percent.

Liberal arts school to open in fall
      Beacon Hill Classical Academy, a Christian classical school in Ventura County, will open its doors in the fall of 2009 for kindergarten, first and second grades in Camarillo. The intention is to add one grade every year through grade 12.

CSUCI nursing program gets shot in arm
      California State University Channel Islands recently received a $240,000 grant from the California Wellness Foundation to support the school's Nursing Pipeline Program. The program helps prepare underrepresented minority students to apply for the CSUCI Baccelaureate in Nursing program.
