      New Year's greetings from your friendly neighborhood California Highway Patrol office. As your friendly CHP area commander, I am concerned about the potential for injuries and collisions as the new traffic lights on Santa Rosa Road are activated.       The California Highway Patrol is offering a free Start Smart traffic safety program for teenage drivers and their parents at 6:30 p.m. Wed., Jan. 28 at the Ventura Area CHP office, Ventura.

Teen arrested for selling drugs
      The Ventura County Sheriff's Special Services Bureau/Narcotics Unit arrested 18-year-old Gavin Brown on a charge of narcotics possession Thurs., Jan. 15. In the evening hours of Jan. 15, detectives say they observed what appeared to be a narcotics transaction at Las Posas Road and Upland Drive in Camarillo.

Be mindful when driving in the rain
      Accidents occur when people drive too fast in rain, snow or fog. Last year in California, 106 people were killed in accidents that took place in rainy, snowy or foggy conditions. More than 7,696 people were injured in crashes in bad weather conditions.

Fundraiser proves to be a slam dunk

The game, which Rio Mesa won 63-53, was one of two rivalry matches that were part of the inaugural "Ball It Up for Cancer," a fundraising evenfor cancer research co-hosted by the two high schools. On Jan. 21, Rio Mesa's boysvarsity basketball team hosted Camarillo High for the second game of the fundraising drive that netted more than $3,000. Rio Mesa won the boys' game 56-50. Checks should be made payable to Spartans for Cure or Scorpions for Cure.

Home tour to benefit paralyzed teen
      The Freethinkers of Ventura County will host a home tour fundraiser from 1 to 4 p.m. Sun., Jan. 25. Charlotte Poe, club founder and president, will offer tours of her 17,500squarefoot home in Somis, accompanied by light refreshments.
