Happy Mother's Day 2008
Mother's Day is May 11 and Acorn readers offer these best wishes to the greatest moms in the world

Mom, while circumstances beyond your control caused us to grow up way below the poverty line, you made life an adventure. You taught me to love science, nature, beauty, books. You gave me the great gift of resiliency and a love of learning. I think of you when I am excitedly describing some new scientific discovery, and others' eyes are glazing over. You gave me a sense of awe. I applaud you!

My mom is a woman of many wonderful qualities. She is eternally optimistic, hard working, dedicated, giving, crazy, honest, open-minded, self-nurturing, self-confident, wise, graceful in her handling of situations and beautiful inside and out.

My family is blessed to have her as an example of how to live life to its fullest. Our time together is always quality time. I am extremely grateful for my mother.

For all the times I do not pick up the phone to tell you I love you mom, please know that you are always in my heart!

When my daughter's eldest son Joey turned 6, we had a huge birthday party for him. The next day he was misbehaving, probably tired from all of the excitement from the day before. Rather than spanking him, my daughter told Joey to change his attitude or she would have an Unbirthday Party. This got Joey's attention. She said all of his presents would be returned and he would go back to being 5 years old.

Joey said, "Can you really do that, mom?" My daughter said, "You bet I can." Joey's attitude immediately changed.

My daughter April is a stayat-home mom with three sons now and I think she is a very special mom.

Dear Mom (Robin), I am always amazed how at age 19 you married a man who already had three children and gave birth to two of your own. Thank you for wanting to give me life and your desire to be a mother. My wish is that you give yourself credit for all your accomplishments. I hope someday you will see yourself for the remarkable mother you are and have been to me for my 47 years.

Your journey as a child, a mother, a provider and as a wife has been difficult. It has tested your character. You set a great example for me. You taught me perseverance, how to overcome obstacles and to remain successful. You taught me the importance of having goals, to believe in myself and how to take care of myself. Thank you for not allowing me to see it any other way.

You have always been my biggest fan. You supported me, loved me and always believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. You helped me get back on my feet again after the most difficult time of my life. You helped me breathe again.

Although I am commended often for my career as a female firefighter by my family, friends and community, I would like to commend you, mom, for the years of service in bravery and sacrifice.

I am blessed to have you in my life. Mom, you are truly my hero. I love you.

My mom is the most amazing person I have ever met in my life. She is by far the strongest, kindest, caring and giving person I know. She has always worked so hard to make everyone around her happy, always putting herself last. I have yet to meet one person that doesn't adore my mom.

Not only is she all around perfect on the inside, but as well on the outside. She's gorgeous. She is my best friend and No. 1 mom. I really don't know what I would do without her in my life, I would be so lost. I love you, mommy!

My mother is special because she puts everyone else first. She made sure my sister and myself got the best educations and had everything before she even thought of herself. My mom is special to me because with everything I have been though and the things I have done, she has always been there for me to help me out of trouble, to guide me with life changing decisions and most of all, to show me how to love.

My mom and dad have a special bond that me and my sister have learned from. I love you mom!

On Mother's Day we get the chance to recognize the ladies who gave us life, helped us learn and watched us grow. I believe that every person ends up with a mother that provides them with the unique qualities they need in life. My mother provided me with freedom and acceptance, for this I am forever grateful. Mom, you don't have to be perfect or conventional to be exactly what I need. Thank you for always being there. I love you.

Vicky Viale from Lima, Peru raised my sister and I in the utmost caring environment. For years she was the only parent, worked a fulltime job and still managed to make us a homecooked meal every night. She taught us the true meaning of family and personal values. As we got older we would tease her of how over-protective she was.

Now a mother myself, I realize she did it for our own good. Today, she gave up retirement in Florida to spend each day lovin' up her two grandchildren. For you, mom, we are forever grateful!

My hard working mom: In 2007 Pleasant Valley School District was going to close our school, Los Senderos. My mom was at every meeting for hours nonstop trying to save our wonderful school. At a meeting they announced Los Senderos would be closed. So we created our own charter school- that's where my mom's hard work and dedication comes in.

Over the hot summer, my mom was in charge of preparing the facility before school started. I didn't know my mom could help lay carpet until that summer. She would be at the school from 9 a.m. in the morning to 6:30 p.m. at night. She was a hard worker. She was the one who went to get the approvals from the city and the fire department.

I am so proud of what my mom has accomplished. Without my wonderful mom this school might not have opened.

Zachary Barraza, 11

My mom is special because when I am sick she makes me feel good. I love my mom. When I'm hungry she makes me special food. She is the best.

Marshall Briody, 7

My mommy is special because I love her. My mommy is so sweet. My mommy is the best in the whole wide world. My mommy helps me do stuff on Webkinz. I love my mommy because she is so sweet.

Colten Pittman, 5

Our mom is the best! Her hugs and kisses always make us feel so special. She always says, "I love you," and we love her, too! Happy Mother's Day, Mommy!

Marina and Tyler Wolowicz

I think my mother should receive the recognition she deserves because in my opinion, I have the greatest mother in the whole world. My mother has handled me since I was born and she took the challenge to become a mother and not just any mother, but my mother.

I have realized how much I have learned and now that I think about it, I don't know what I would do without her. My dearest mother, Maria Alvarez-Rojas, has been my hero ever since I learned what a hero was. Who has the greatest mother in the whole world? I do.

Elizabeth Alvarez-Rojas

My mom is the best mom you can get. When she bakes she makes the most wonderful meals. It almost seems that she is in two places at once, like when she comes to all of my games and all of my brother and sisters games. Also she is helpful when she helps me with my homework. That is why my mom is the best.

Nick Richey, 12

My mom deserves to be a Mom of the Year because she has made delicious meals and cookies for my family and I, even though we misbehave. She is a role model because she makes a joke or is really polite when she tells me to do stuff. She lets me try out what she is eating (usually cauliflower or something) and I like it.

She hugs me when I am scared. She constantly encourages us to help out and compliments us when we do. My mom has been kind enough to let us sleep over at our friends' houses. My mom, Erin, is truly a hero.

Spencer Richey, 11

My mom is special because she is kind, respectful and loving. She cheers me up when I'm sad or hurt. I think my mom is a good cook. She's really good at making cookies and pies and other things. Her secret ingredient is love.

On December first I wanted a kitten. And on December 3 I almost tripped on a tabby kitten. The kitten followed me to school and every time a car came by the kitten jumped into the bushes. When we got to the street my mom picked him up and took him home. Now he is mine.

Sierra Richey

My mother is special because she helps me get where I need to be. She brings me to swimming each night and always supports me at my meets. She helps in my class and at home. Whenever I'm scared she always makes me feel better.

My mom is so involved with everything I do, including CineMagic, swimming, school and a bunch of other stuff. At night she reads with me and teaches me all the stuff I need to know for next year. So thanks for everything you do. I love you so much!

You are our mother,

We are your daughters.

My mom is special because she comes to field trips and parties at school and she loves me very much.

She also takes care of me when I sick. She does everything for me and works for my school and Girl Scouts. She spends a lot of time with me- that is why she is special. I love my mom!

Madison Pittman, 8

Ann Lindenmeyer: Mom is special because she is always there for her three kids and is the best "Mema" in the world to her grandkids Lauren and Luke. She always knows how to put a smile on their faces and provide a little relief to mom and dad. Her great cooking keeps us all fat, and her potato salad is the best!

Thanks for being the best mom in the world; you are loved and appreciated by all of us. Love, Rick, Richard, Dana, and Jason.

Richard Lindenmeyer

I like to play puzzles with my mom. I like to go to the park with her and play restaurant too. My mom is generous and always shares with me and my brother, and she teaches us to share with each other. She takes care of us when we're sick. Sometimes she is funny and makes me laugh. I love her and I am lucky to have her as a mom.

Abby Chomiller, 6

I love Mommy for a lot of reasons. She is so nice to me and always tucks me in at bedtime. I like to go shopping with her and see what she gets, especially when she gets toys for me. I like playing dump trucks with her too. She's the best!

Lucas Chomiller, 4

I am an 87-year-old mother, grandmother and great grandmother. I still miss the comfort and unconditional love of my mother. She was a sweet, kind lady who wrote poetry and had an Aesop fable for every situation.

She taught me never to exchange or return a gift, be honest, be kind, be forgiving and never speak badly about anyone. I remember how hard she worked and served and protected me.

Did I complement her cooking enough? Did I tell her I loved her and how proud I was of her enough? Do I remember her on Mother's Day and every day? Yes. As long as I live, I will always remember her.

To Shannon Brigham at Lulu's Princess Parties, a fairy godmother to all. You always make us feel like "birthday family." We all love you and are going to miss you lots! Happy Mother's Day.

All your princesses
and their moms

Dear Grandma Penny, What would our mommy and daddy do without you? Thank you for always picking us up, watching us and for making us feel so incredibly special when we're with you! Happy Mother's Day! Lots of hugs and kisses.
