Tips for finding the best pediatrician

A pediatrician's role can actually begin before a child is born. A prenatal visit is a great opportunity for the expecting parents to interview the pediatrician. It is a chance to ask questions and feel better about choosing the medical provider for what may be many years.

I tell parents to look for the "Three A's" in choosing a pediatrician: Availability, Affability and Ability.

Availability: What happens when your child is sick at 3 a.m.? Is there a call coverage arrangement? Can you have your questions answered or advice given at that hour? Also, how easy is it to get a same day appointment when your child is sick? Does the pediatrician return phone calls in a timely manner?

Affability: Is the prospective pediatrician friendly? Are questions answered in a straightforward, noncondescending manner? Can the prospective pediatrician speak to you in easy to understand language, that is, "layman's terms" as opposed to medical terms.

Ability: Ask about credentials. Is the prospective pediatrician board certified? May also be indicated by "FAAP" (Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics) or "Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics." Word of mouth from other parents is also an excellent way to choose.
