Japanese students visit local school A group of 12 elementary school students from Japan will attend Las Posas Elementary School in Camarillo for a week. The children, ages 10 to 12, will get a firsthand exposure to American culture and educational practices while Las Posas' students will gain insight to Japanese culture. The group from Japan will use an empty classroom for English lessons but will spend much of the week immersed in regular third-, fourth- and fifth-grade classes. The students are from Kagoshima, Japan, nicknamed "Naples of the Eastern World." The city of about 600,000 people is famous for its "onsen," or steambaths. The group will arrive Wed., March 26 and visit a school in Ventura on Fri., March 28. They will attend Las Posas from Mon., March 31 to Fri., April 4 and return to Japan on April 5. Cultural Homestay International, the sponsoring organization, is looking for volunteer families to host a pair of children while they are in the United States. To volunteer or for more information, call Scott Ingram at (805) 504-5396. |
