"Humble" and "dedicated" best describe Greg Punsalan, an 18yearold Camarillo teen recently named Youth of the Year by the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce.
"At first I was kind of in disbelief," Punsalan said of the congratulatory phone call from Chamber President Tom Kelley. "I feel that there probably are other people who did do more . . . (but) I'm happy."
The Chamber will honor Punsalan and the nine other winners of the 41st annual Top Ten Community Awards at Las Posas Country Club Sat., March 8. Technicolor will also award Punsalan a $1,500 college scholarship.
Phyllis Punsalan said her youngest child has always been dedicated and compassionate.
"He's such a caring person," she said. "When he wants to do something he does it, and he's very loyal."
The Adolfo Camarillo High senior plans to attend college in the fall and become a nurse like his mother and older brother. Greg Punsalan volunteers at St. John's Pleasant Valley Hospital and is involved with the Red Cross Club on campus. He's lieutenant governor of KIWIN'S, a Kiwanis community-service student club.
Under his leadership- he's responsible for clubs on three Ventura County high school campuses- KIWIN'S raised several hundred dollars last year for charities and the organization's premier project, a pediatric trauma prevention program where club members educate the public on the importance of using car seats or seat belts for children. Additionally, Punsalan and other KIWIN'S members have been volunteering at the Rescue Mission in Oxnard since December, preparing and serving meals to those in need then cleaning up the cafeteria afterward.
Punsalan loves playing tennis. Since the age of 8, he's traveled the country, ranking nationally on the junior tennis circuit. He joined the Camarillo High varsity tennis team his freshman year.
For four decades, the Chamber has recognized people and businesses that have made a difference in Camarillo. Anyone can make a nomination, and a 12-person committee selects the 10 winners.
