Spend money on students, not legal fees

I am writing in response to the Feb. 8 article "Battle over unification has put new high school on hold." Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't Adolfo Camarillo High School and Adolfo Camarillo High School students part of Oxnard Union High School District now? Yes, we are now and always have been. With that in mind, why do we have to wait until the issue of Adolfo Camarillo High School unifying with Camarillo's elementary schools is solved to have a new high school built? Oxnard has placed its sign up to make it look like Camarillo residents are going to get a new high school.

As I said before, we are part of their district now, so why wait? Camarillo hasn't moved. We are still where we have always been, which is part of the OUHSD. Camarillo has been working on unification long before the bond was passed to finance a new high school, yet OUHSD still has not broken ground on a new school.

I believe it is because OUHSD is doing everything it can to not have to build a new high school in Camarillo. OUHSD officials talk about the increase in construction costs in the article. But if the school was built when it was promised, the cost would have been far less then it will cost now. Isn't it actually OUHSD that is at fault for waiting? Only the OUHSD can build the new school.

As the issue of unification makes it way through Sacramento, will OUHSD ask for another bond to be passed so they can then build us a high school while the present bond money is spent on other district schools and other district needs?

OUHSD is using district money on legal fees to fight the Pleasant Valley School District on the issue of unification, but it is not spending money on the new school.

It all seems so simple to me. Why can't the OUHSD board see it? If the legal fight stops, PVSD would be able to make their own decision on unification. I guess that scares the OUHSD.

Yes, I know it all comes down to money. Well, let's try something new. Let's think about the students. What's best for them? As a mother of four, my oldest at ACHS, I would like OUHSD to think of my children first for once. Maryann Ketchum Camarillo
