Variety of volunteer opportunities offered

Residents are invited to participate in any of the following volunteer opportunities in the area. For more information or to sign up, call the phone number listed for the event.

•Malibu Lagoon Museum/ Adamson House at Surfrider Beach offers docent training program from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. beginning Tues., Jan. 29 for six weeks.

Trainees will learn Malibu's history and details about the Adamson House. Course fee and membership is $40.

Docents give tours of the site, work in the gift shop and handle special programs and social events. For information or to sign up, call Donna Lemkin at (310) 456-1517.

•Laubach Literacy of Ventura County will offer free workshops to train volunteers to tutor adults in English as a Second Language.

The workshop will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sat., Feb. 2 and 9 at the First Assembly of God Church in Ventura; directions will be given upon registration.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion after attending both days of training.

The Laubach Literacy method will be demonstrated and taught during the workshops and will enable the new tutor to begin ESL tutoring right away and teach English to adults who are nonfluent English speakers. Neither teaching experience nor the ability to speak a foreign language is necessary.

•The nonprofit Volunteer Organization of Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks has many opportunities available for volunteers, such as discharging patients, information desks, admitting, emergency room, surgery information desk, gift shop, recovery room and others.
