Enter contest with marine or coastal theme

The California Coastal Commission invites students in kindergarten through 12the grade to enter the 2008 California Coastal Art and Poetry Contest.

Arts and poetry must have a California coastal or marine theme to be eligible.

The contest's aim is to encourage youth to reflect on the beauty and spirit of the state's beaches and oceans and gain a sense of stewardship for these natural resources.

Winners will be selected in both art and poetry in each of four gradelevel categories: kindergarten to three, four to six, seven to nine and 10 to 12.

Winners will receive a $100 gift certificate to an art supply or book store.

Each winner's teacher will be given a $40 gift certificate for educational materials.

All entries must include an entry form.

Newcomers get together

The Camarillo Newcomers Club will meet at 11 a.m. Thurs., Jan. 17, at the Sterling Hills Golf Club, 901 Sterling Hills Drive, Camarillo. Lunch will be served at noon.

Linda M. Montoya, assistant director of the Ventura Counseling Center, will talk about communication skills.

Cost for lunch is $16 per member and $18 per guest. The reservation deadline is Sat., Jan. 12.

4 art exhibits

Studio Channel Islands Art Center will present four exhibits, Jan. 12 to March 1, in building 18 on Ventura Street at California State Channel Islands in Camarillo.
