Ancient holiday celebrated
     IRIS SMOOT/Acorn Newspapers HONORING LIFE—With their faces painted in traditional skull designs, Eugenio Gomez, 7, shows his decorated sugar skull to his brother Frank, 4, at "El Gran Fandango," the inaugural Dia de los Muertos celebration at Conejo Mountain Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Camarillo on Sunday. The event included Aztec dancers, music, a procession around the cemetery and traditional decorated altars. Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday dating back 3,000 years to the Aztecs and other indigenous peoples to honor the dead and celebrate their lives.

Coffee house hosts reception
      Proverbs CoffeeHouse will begin its "Harvest of the Hues" exhibit with a reception from 1 to 4 p.m. Sat., Nov. 8 at the coffee shop in Peace Lutheran Church, 71 Loma Drive, Camarillo. The reception will include a demonstration of gourd art.

Community theater holds meeting
      The Camarillo Community Theatre will hold a general meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sun., Nov. 9 at the theater, 330 Skyway Drive, Camarillo. The meeting will include discussion of the theater's 2009 season and election of a new board of directors. Volunteer opportunities will be available, and those who want to may pay dues and become a member.
