Passage of Measure U would greatly raise taxes for all Camarillo property owners and will likely place our students in inferior or overcrowded high school facilities when compared to the status quo. All three options proposed by Measure U proponents to house high school students from central and west Camarillo would require major facilities capital expenditure. More ... The Pleasant Valley School Board's handling of the school closures, the budget woes that led to people losing their jobs and the acrimonious dealings with the Pleasant Valley Education Association regarding teacher salaries was a disaster. Now, if U passes, some of those same people will be on the new unified school board. More ... Maybe someone out there can explain to the rest of us why, if a group's or person's case, pro or con, is a good one, so many find it necessary to use bald-faced lies in support of their positions. Todd Terres Camarillo More ... The state Board of Education approved unification going forward to the voters at their March meeting. In her letter to the Star dated March 13, 2008, Sandra Berg, Pleasant Valley School District trustee and current candidate for Camarillo Unified, indicated that the SBOE was the most authoritative body in regards to this type of matter. More ... The Camarillo Unified people put out an ad last week in the Camarillo Acorn listing several teachers as supporters of unification who had not agreed to have their names published. That is election fraud. There were even some listed as supporters who don't even support unification. More ... Proponents and opponents of Measure U both claim that property taxes will increase if the other side wins. But taxes cannot be increased without voter approval, and 2004 voter approval in Oxnard obligates Camarillo and Somis for a significant tax increase if we do not unify. More ... In September of 1982, a new K8 named Las Colinas opened its doors. I was very angry that I had to attend Las Colinas. My brother got to attend Monte Vista, a "real" junior high. The first year the school was opened for K-7. More ... The headline "Camarillo deeply split on proposal to unify schools," brings up a question. Why, if unification truly benefits the education of all students in Camarillo, has it created such division in this community? Issues become divisive when people examine the facts, question them and do not receive satisfactory answers. More ... For well over 20 years, people in Camarillo and Somis have wanted a unified school district to ensure that students receive a coordinated and comprehensive curriculum as they progressed through school. Here is an opportunity to unify, to ensure that teachers, administrators and finances function together for the benefit of our students. More ... The state of California financially favors unified districts. That's why districts like Conejo Valley Unified do a better job paying their teachers and offering programs. Elementary districts without a significant amount of Title I money, like PVSD, are financially crippled. More ... Measure U has commanded the majority of attention in our community during this election. Although it has been divisive, it's an important issue and must be debated. Depending on the outcome of Measure U, we will be deciding who will represent us on the PVSD board if Measure U fails or the Camarillo Unified board if Measure U passes. More ... Four years ago, the high school district asked voters to pass a $135million bond for school improvement and building two new schools (Measure H). The voter material sent to Oxnard and Port Hueneme stated that local high schools were overcrowded due to increasing numbers of students entering each year. More ... I'd like to present the following arguments being made in regards to Measure U: "We need to keep our tax dollars in Camarillo." A portion of all California's regular property taxes go to Sacramento and then are reallocated to districts on a per student basis. The only tax dollars which stay in Camarillo are from bonds that voters approve. More ... I am writing to support Measure U. This support stems from the community interest in continuing the high level of student achievement at the Santa Rosa Technology Magnet School. More ... Unification will not secure a new high school but prevent it. Cost estimates for construction of a new high school stand at $90 million. More ... As superintendent of the Pleasant Valley School District, I am compelled to submit this response to the misrepresentations of the Oxnard Union High School District Ballot Argument to Measure U. Any increase in taxes to Camarillo and Somis taxpayers would have to be approved by the voters of the new district. More ... My support of Measure U stems from interest in continuing the high level of student achievement found at Santa Rosa Technology Magnet School through their high school years. More ... The creation of the Camarillo Unified School District is a monumental decision for the good of all students and parents in both cities. It not only gives Camarillo local control of kindergarten through 12th grades, but it allows Oxnard to focus more energy and motivation to unite their own districts under one board and one superintendent. More ... Measure U is not worth your time and vote. The supposed new high school by the Camarillo Library is not even owned by the PVSD, it is the OUHSD's property. Also, the advertisement in last week's Acorn was a fraud. Fourteen out of 30 teachers listed on that list are against Measure U, but Measure U's supporters used their names in their advertisement. More ... I have been involved with the unification process for the last 15 years. I have heard all of the promises from Oxnard Union High School District; every time we pass a bond we are promised the next new high school built will be in Camarillo. When the last bond was on the ballot, Dr. More ... The recent article referring to "Speakers upset board meeting held on Jewish holy day," Oct. 17, was of particular interest to me. More ... Three of the five current PVSD school board members are running for the new Camarillo Unified School Board should Measure U pass. Have they lived up to their obligations to the students, teachers and citizens of Camarillo? More ... Recent editorials from Camarillo Unified have suggested that the best way a new high school would be built in Camarillo would be through the passage of Measure U. I think we all can agree that building a new high school is the subject most people in Camarillo really care about, but I disagree with their conclusion. More ... How many of you parents have sat on the committees that looked at possible high school scenarios? Have you ever looked at magnet high school programs in other communities, such as the Foothill Technology High School right here in our county? More ... My children have thrived in PVSD schools. I have always been impressed with the effort their teachers have put forth to keep my children motivated and successful in all they do. More ... "Yes" on Measure U is the only right way to vote. Tax dollars paid by Camarillo residents will stay in Camarillo. We have already helped to build two new high schools in Oxnard since 1995. It isn't difficult to realize that if we stay with OUHSD our tax dollars will be building yet another high school in Oxnard. More ... I strongly support Dr. Mark Lisagor over the incumbent for Ventura County Board of Education. As a successful businessman, he will bring muchneeded fiscal responsibility to the board. He will also bring an attitude of professionalism and nonpartisanship that is sorely lacking. More ... I write this letter in support of Dr. Mark Lisagor. Dr. Lisagor brings experience, good judgment and a lifetime of dedication to children. Dr. Lisagor brings to this important position the skills of a well-honed collaborator. He builds consensus and is always a problem-solver. His approach consistently looks for avenues of success. More ... I recently read that a victory by Hannah-Beth Jackson would essentially give legislative Democrats a two-thirds majority in the state Senate. This is important because that is the threshold for imposing new taxes without bipartisan negotiation and also removes the check-and-balance of a gubernatorial veto. More ... California's budget problems keep coming back year after year. During election season, we get to hear candidates provide their proposed solutions and plans to deal with this problem. In the local state Senate race, I have read and heard Tony Strickland address this issue directly. More ... We are now more than a month away from the Metrolink accident of Sept. 12. For many people, the memory of this horrific event has already begun to recede in the midst of the pressures of daily living. The survivors and their families and friends, however, must cope with their losses and grief. This is a process that may take many years. More ... Among the issues that were apparently not addressed in your decision to locate a state prison hospital in Camarillo is the impact that this facility will have on local law enforcement. More ... First, this issue should not even be on the ballot. The California Supreme Court ruled that same sex couples have the civil right to marry. Constitutional rights should not be subject to a popular vote. But, it is on the ballot. A "yes" vote for Proposition 8 supports discrimination based on sexual preference. More ... Once again it's fall here in Southern California, and that means fire season. We may not get the beautiful fall foliage, but we do get the Santa Ana winds which dry everything out. I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone to have an evacuation plan in place not only for your family but for the furry members of the family—your pets. More ... |
