Schools chief backs principal
In regards to the Sept. 26 letter to the editor written by Sean C. O'Donnell, I appreciated Mr. O'Donnell's praising Dos Caminos Elementary School for improved test scores. In addition, remarks concerning Mr. Patrick Fitzgerald, principal of Las Colinas, were also well received.

Strickland supporter
It looks like the 19th District state Senate race will be one to watch closely. It appears two very different viewpoints are represented in this race. From my perspective, this election is about sending a message to Sacramento.

Also supports Strickland
I just read that state Senate candidate Tony Strickland received the endorsement of the Ventura Chamber of Commerce. The article included the California Chamber ratings for both Strickland and his opponent, Hannah-Beth Jackson.

A vote for Strickland
As a business owner and parent, I am stunned by the silence of candidate HannahBeth Jackson on the economy. I'm further shocked by her record on increasing taxes. Jackson has apparently voted to raise taxes on California workers, voting to impose city and county income taxes in addition to the state and federal income taxes we already pay.

Look for cause of cancer
I was sorry to read on Oct. 3 that Tina Holland of Camarillo has leukemia. Many such cancers are linked to environmental factors. Researcher Edward Priestley found the causes of many blood diseases include toxic chemicals, radiation and certain medical drugs. Often more than one exposure is needed to trigger the illness.

Argues against Prop. 8 defense
I would like to respond to Patty Banks' Oct. 3 letter. With all due respect, I am completely baffled by your "apples and oranges" comparison to Jenny Chikasawa's Sept. 19 letter.

Says city cannot afford unification
As I write this, the country is in the worst financial crisis since 1929. In the midst of this financial crisis, we are asked to vote for Measure U,

In support of U
Camarillo students will always be last in line with the Oxnard Union High School District. This has nothing to do with discrimination, has nothing to do with how OUHSD "feels" about Camarillo; it has to do with numbers. The needs of the students in the Oxnard area will always overshadow the needs of Camarillo students.

Think about the future
In regards to Christine Elliott's Sept. 26 letter, she is right when she says Measure U is about the future. If Measure U passes, imagine a future for Adolfo Camarillo High School in which a majority of its veteran teachers are forced by circumstances to leave rather than lose lifetime medical benefits.

Believes mailer is deceptive
Twenty-two million dollar funding cut? Measure U doesn't cut overall funding for schools as claimed by No on Measure U in their deceptive mailer this week. The California Department of Education and the county Board of Education would not have approved Measure U if it reduced school funding.

Don't overcrowd high school
I have been reading the pros and cons of unification, and what I would ask first is, what is this district going to look like when school begins in '09 if unification passes? Camarillo High will be housing 3,200 students with a campus crowded with portables to house the 800 students from Camarillo who now attend RMHS and incoming eighth-graders.

Teacher supports unification
I am a teacher and parent from the Pleasant Valley School District. I grew up in Camarillo, and my husband and I both graduated from Rio Mesa High School. We have two children attending schools in the Pleasant Valley School District and a sophomore at Camarillo High School.

Measure U too costly
A political action group, Camarillo Unified, is promoting Measure U, which will remove 900 Camarillo and Somis students from the Oxnard Union High School District. These "Unifiers" distributed a flier the first week of October that stated "Question: Will it raise my taxes? Answer: Not one penny.
