National Parks 'Second Century' commission meets in county
      A blue-ribbon commission comprising scientists, conservationists, politicians and other community leaders met Aug. 25 and 26 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village to discuss the future role of America's national parks.

Anti-Semitic vandal sought
      On Aug. 15, numerous incidents of graffiti vandalism occurred throughout the city of Camarillo. The graffiti consisted of swastikas and other haterelated racial writings. A subject was viewed on surveillance video in the area of some of the vandalism during the time they occurred.

Former White House counsel to speak at Moorpark College
Event is free and open to the public
      Former White House counsel John Dean is the keynote speaker at the Constitution Day events on Wed., Sept. 17 at Moorpark College, 7075 Campus Road, Moorpark. The public is invited to attend at no charge. A free-speech forum with tables from area political groups and voter registration will open at 10 a.m. in front of the Performing Arts Center on campus.

      The Camarillo Noontime Op timist Club announces its schedule for September. Meetings are held at noon every Monday at Round Table Pizza, 880 Arneill Road, Camarillo. Sept. 8: Judy Goulet will discuss the Meadowlarks. Sept. 15: County supervisor Kathy Long will discuss recent and proposed budget cutbacks and their effect on county services.

Naval base wins national energy award
      Naval Base Ventura County has been selected for the 2008 Secretary of the Navy Energy and Water Management Award in water conservation for the large shore installation category. Naval Facilities Command Public Works Department manages the energy conservation program at the base. The award comes with a $45,000 funding to further energy conservation.

Food for those in need
     HONORING ED COBERT—Summer swim toys, clothing and backpacks were collected by the Camarillo Rotary Club in memory of longtime member Ed Cobert, who spearheaded the annual holiday drive benefiting the Rain Project, a program providing temporary housing for homeless families. Representing the club are Ventura County Supervisor Kathy Long and Camarillo resident Bill Kohagen, who recently made the delivery to the Camarillo-based shelter.

School wellness workshop offered
      A school wellness workshop will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Mon., Sept. 15 at the Ventura County Office of Education, 5100 Adolfo Road, Camarillo. The workshop will include presentations on healthy classroom parties, fundraising, staff wellness, school environment and physical activity.

The power, ingenuity of young minds
     TESTING A LEGO ROBOT—Cornerstone Christian School students Nathan Fang, a 9-year-old fourth-grader, left, and Michael Minkoff, a 13-year-old eighth-grader, work together building and programming a small Lego robot during a recent Robot Camp program at the Camarillo Boys & Girls Club. The program is sponsored by the Pleasant Valley Education Foundation and is intended to teach students about engineering and basic computer programming. About 125 students participated in the Robot Camp. On Nov. 1, students will enter their robots in a local competition that will feature various challenges the robots will have to complete.

Train with county running club
      Registration for RunVentura, a new walking and running club, is ongoing at 7:30 a.m. every Saturday in September at Inside Track, 38 W. Main St., Ventura. The club will train for all distances. The group meets at 7:30 a.m. every Saturday at Inside Track as well as during the week for track and hill workouts and on Sundays for trail runs.

AYSO hosts blood drive
      American Youth Soccer Organization Region 68 of Camarillo will host a blood drive tomorrow, Sat., Sept. 6, for a former player who has cancer. The bloodmobile will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Freedom Park. Thomas Hearne, 8, was diagnosed with brain cancer in July and is receiving treatment at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

      The Democratic Club of Camarillo will open a campaign office to serve Democratic candidates running for office and volunteers working on campaigns. The grand opening will be from 4 to 7 p.m. tomorrow, Sat., Sept. 6, at 1727 E. Daily Drive, behind Presto Pasta.

      First Lutheran Church of Camarillo will hold a charity golf tournament Sat., Sept. 27 at Elkins Ranch Golf Course in Fillmore. Cost is $100 for the tournament, cart use and barbecue. Cost of the barbecue alone is $25. To register, please call (805) 300-4833.

Author to discuss WW II book
      Author Karen Finell will discuss her book "Good-bye to the Mermaids" at 2 p.m. Sun., Sept. 7 in the community room at the Camarillo Library, 4101 Las Posas Road. The book tells the story of World War II as it affected three generations of middle-class German women.
