Airport, city water lines to be connected
      The Camarillo Airport and surrounding complex's water system will be connected to the city's, and the project is expected to be completed before the end of September. Teenage daughter of slain woman given control over mother's affairs
      Like many of her friends growing up in Camarillo, 18-year-old Desiree Goudie was enjoying her summer after graduating from Camarillo High School in June. Sobriety checkpoints planned throughout county for next two weekends
      Four sobriety checkpoints are in the works for the next two weekends in Ventura County as Avoid the 14 cracks down on impaired drivers, according to Senior Officer Humberto Jimenez of the Oxnard Police Department and Avoid the 14 campaign coordinator.

Partnership in search of grantees
      Ventura County AIDS Partnership is seeking qualified grantees to provide HIV prevention programs and patient care services in Ventura County. The agency plans to allocate $100,000 for 2009. The deadline for applications is Tues., Sept. 30 with a mandatory training session on Tues., Aug. 26.

U.S. Coast Guard celebrates 218th birthday
     ALWAYS READY—In celebration of the U.S. Coast Guard's founding 218 years ago—what was then known as the Revenue Marine and the Revenue Cutter Service—the Ventura County Maritime Museum hosted a party Aug. 4 for the local sailors serving out of the U.S. Coast Guard Station Channel Islands and aboard Blacktip, the Coast Guard's cutter docked in Oxnard. As part of the ceremony, master ship builder Richard Walton, right, presents Camarillo resident and Executive Petty Officer Aaron Ferguson with a replica of a 95foot steel hull patrol craft.
