Murder suspects await trial
      More than a year and a half after four Seabees were arrested in connection with the 2006 slaying of John Marmo, they remain behind bars as they await trial. Matthew Toerner, 21, of Laguna Hills, Calif., who has confessed to the shooting in court records, and Marmo's ex-wife Rebecca Braswell, 27, of Chandler, Ariz.

VCFD names new public information officer
      The Ventura County Fire Department has named Capt. Ron Oatman as the department's new spokesperson. He officially began his new duties in July but, until recently, has been assigned to fires in Northern California. Oatman is replacing Capt. Barry Parker, who will return to his regular firefighting duties at Station 36 in Oak Park.

Sheriff's department forensics lab receives international accreditation
      The Ventura County Sheriff's Department Forensic Sciences Laboratory, led by Laboratory Manager Renee Artman, has been granted accreditation under a new international program managed by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/ LAB).

Cooking with the Lions
     FAMOUS FOR THEIR BARBECUE—Members of the Pleasant Valley Lions Club spend time together at their 20th annual Family Day Picnic at Camarillo Grove Park on July 12. The club grilled up a barbecue lunch for the 85 seniors who attend classes at the Braille Institute and their families. The free program, supported by the Lions, teaches those with low vision how to care for themselves without having to move into a retirement home or other care facility. Selig sixth at Jr. Olympics
      Blake Selig, one of the top three qualifiers at the Southern Sectionals and the Region 15 Championships, took sixth place in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 4 inches at the National Junior Olympics in Omaha, Neb.
