Fire department warns of July Fourth dangers
Recent statistics show that one-third of injuries by fireworks were to children under the age of 15
      The Ventura County Fire Department reminds residents that the safe and legal way to enjoy fireworks on Fourth of July is at a professional public display. Fireworks of all kinds are illegal in the cities of Camarillo, Moorpark, Ojai, Port Hueneme, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and the unincorporated areas of Ventura County.

Pet adopt-athon will raise funds
      Rescue Me Incorporated will host the fourth annual Hugs, Slurps and Slobbers Adopt-athon from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sun., July 27 at the Ventura County Animal Shelter, 600 Aviation Drive, Camarillo. The goal of the event is to find homes for all the available animals and to create public awareness for the shelter.

Volleyball league seeks players
      The United States Youth Volleyball League is accepting registration for the upcoming fall season. The eight-week program teaches children the fundamentals of volleyball, such as serving, passing, setting and spiking. The league meets from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at Pleasant Valley Community Center, 275 E. Pleasant Valley Road, Camarillo.

BBQ will aid man with cancer
      A barbecue fundraiser for the Gary Dixon Medical Relief Fund will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sat., July 12 at Barranca Vista Park, 7050 Ralston St., Ventura. The barbecue will include tritip, chicken, bread, beans, salad, dessert and soft drinks. The event will also feature a silent auction and a chance to win a three-night, four-day cruise to Mexico.

Costs for school lunches jump 40 percent
      Pleasant Valley students will pay more for school meals this year. The school board voted 4-1 last week to raise the price of breakfast, lunch and milk. Suzanne Kitchens cast the lone no vote. "I just think it's too much too quickly," Kitchens said. "I'm concerned with what will happen with such a large jump.

Libraries closed for Fourth of July
      The Ventura County Library community libraries will be closed Fri., July 4, for the Independence Day holiday. This includes Camarillo Library, Oak Park Library and Simi Valley Library. Books may be returned to the book drops at any of the community libraries.

      PINK POWER!- Camarillo Brownie troop 60519 shows their "Pink Ponies" team banner during the Brownilympics at Rio Mesa High School on June 14, 2008. The annual contest draws Brownies from Camarillo, Newbury Park, Oxnard, Port Hueneme, El Rio, Ventura and Ojai. Madison Pittman, an 8-year-old with troop 60519 won the Patch Contest.
