Volleyball sign ups
      Registration for the United States Youth Volleyball League's spring season is in progress. The program fills quickly and space is limited. The deadline for registration is Sat., March 1. The eight-week league will be held at Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District Community Center, 1605 E. Burnley St., beginning in April.

Spartans fall to Harvard-Westlake in semifinals
RMHS has talent to compete again next year, coach says
      The Rio Mesa High girls' water polo team's season came to an end Wednesday, as the Spartans lost to top-seeded Harvard Westlake 9-3 in the CIF-Southern Section Division IV semifinals. It was the furthest the Spartans (258) had ever gone in the playoffs. Rio Mesa had lost in the quarter-finals the last three years.

Wolves taking a bite out of the competition
      ON THE PROWL- The California Wolves inline roller hockey team, featuring 11 and 12year-olds from throughout Ventura and Los Angeles counties, won its first three tournaments of the season, going undefeated in the process.

PalmerNewton makes college choice
      NEXT STEP- Matthew Palmer-Newton, a senior defensive end/linebacker at Rio Mesa High, recently signed a National Letter of Intent with Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Palmer-Newton has been awarded both an academic and a football scholarship. He intends to major in history.
