High school to honor local pastor
Priest is graduate of St. John's Seminary

Santa Clara High School will honor one of its graduates, local Catholic parish pastor the Rev. Jon F. Majarucon at its 17th annual dinner auction fundraiser, "A Night at the Oscars," at 5 p.m. Sat., Dec. 1 at the school's Friedrich Pavilion, 2121 Saviers Road, Oxnard.

Socializing and a silent auction will be followed by dinner and a live auction, according to Barbara Laubacher, committee co-chair.

The auctions will include discount certificates for local restaurants and businesses, collectibles, themed gift baskets, jewelry, sightseeing trips, sports tickets and other school sports memorabilia.

Proceeds from the event will be used to strengthen academic programs at the school, Laubacher said.

Majarucon has served as pastor of Santa Clara Parish in downtown Oxnard since 2002. At the high school he counsels students and staff, and shares the lessons of his educational experience with the administrative team, said Principal Siobhan O'Reilly-Hill.

After graduating with Santa Clara's class of 1976, Majarucon entered St. John's Catholic Seminary in Camarillo, where he earned an undergraduate degree in philosophy in 1980, and a master's degree in divinity in 1983. He was ordained a priest in the Los Angeles Archdiocese the next year.

Prior his appointment to Santa Clara Parish, Majarucon served 16 years as a chaplain for the Los Angeles Police Department. An experienced pilot, he enjoys flying in his free time.

Tickets to the dinner auction, priced at $50 per person, may be obtained by calling the school, Laubacher said. Tickets will not be sold at the event. Since last year's event sold out, prompt reservations are suggested. Sponsor opportunities are also available.
