Society announces November lineup
Audubon plans countrywide trips

The Ventura Audubon Society will host birding trips during November. Beginners are welcome on all field trips, and rain cancels any trip.

Fri., Nov. 2, 7:50 a.m. to noon: Point Mugu Naval Base. Leader: Mugu staff. Registration for this trip ended on Oct. 15. Those registered must have picture ID cards with names matching the names on the list. Vehicles, articles and personnel are subject to search. Cameras and video equipment are not allowed. Scopes are allowed. Meet at the main entrance.

Sun., Nov. 4, 9 a.m. to noon: Restoration Work Day, Hedrick Ranch Nature Area Restoration Program, Santa Paula. Leader: Sandy Hedrick, (805) 340-0478. Birding will be at 8 a.m. Work at 9 a.m. will continue the removal of invasive plants and maintenance of previous plantings. Wear sturdy work shoes and gardening gloves.

Sun., Nov. 11, 8:30 a.m.: Wheeler Canyon. Leader: Gary Tuttle, (805) 525-2327. Look for sparrows, raptors, shrikes and maybe a Lewis woodpecker. Meet at the beginning of Wheeler Canyon Road where there is parking.

Tues., Nov. 13, 7:30 p.m.: Poinsettia Pavilion, 3451 Foothill Road, Ventura. Rick Daniels, the executive director of the Salton Sea Authority, will explain how the authority restores and revitalizes the Salton Sea for the benefit of birds and fish that call it home or pass through on their migratory passages.

Sat., Nov. 17, 8 a.m.: Steckel Park. Leader: Karl Krause, (805) 525-2452. Varied habitat, live oak and creek side provide a variety of birds including woodpeckers, raptors and kinglets. There is a parking fee or parking is available along the road outside the park.

Sat., Nov. 24, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.: Beginners Bird Walk, Ojai Meadow Preserve. Leader: Allen Bertke, (805) 640-9037. To car pool, meet at 7:50 a.m. at the side parking lot of the Ventura County Museum, 100 E. Main St., Ventura, or meet at the north end of the Nordoff High School parking lot. Birds expected include raptors, meadowlarks, sparrows, egrets and bluebirds.

Wed., Nov. 28, 8:30 a.m.: Arroyo Verde Park, Ventura. Leaders: Carl and Nancy Schorsch, (805) 643-5825. The group will pre-scout for the Christmas Bird Count.
