Charter school receives grant

The Camarillo Academy of Progressive Education has received a $450,000 grant that will be used to outfit the new charter school with state-of-the-art equipment.

CAPE was one of seven schools selected recently to receive a California Public Charter School Planning and Implementation Grant. The California Department of Education awards the competitive grants to entities that are likely to develop and open high-quality charter schools.

The money, which will be distributed over two years, will provide technology for all of the classrooms, including digital overhead projectors and laptops.

The grant will also enable the school to buy supplies for the music and art programs, from violins to digital cameras.

"We will be able to outfit our classrooms with the latest educational technology, providing our teachers with stateoftheart resources to enhance our children's educational program," said Gloria Miele, member of the school's Board of Directors and chair of the grants committee. "This is an incredible boost."

CAPE is a public school in Camarillo and chartered by the Oxnard Union High School District. It has 345 students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
