Soaring on Audubon birding field trips in October The Ventura Audubon Society will conduct birding field trips in October. Beginners are welcome on all trips, and rain cancels any trip. For more information, call the leader of each trip. •Wed., Oct. 3, 8 a.m.: Carpinteria Salt Marsh and Creek. Leader: Janet Kessler, (805) 6503382. Meet at the Ventura County Museum, 100 E. Main St., Ventura at 8 a.m. to car pool, or meet at the marsh entrance at 8:30. Birds seen may include shorebirds, waders, peeps, ducks, kingfishers, kites, shrikes, and warblers. •Sat., Oct. 6, 9 a.m. to noon: Restoration Work Day, Santa Paula. Hedrick Ranch Nature Area Restoration Program. Leader: Sandy Hedrick, (805) 340-0478. Arrive at 8 a.m. for birding. Work includes removing invasive plants and maintaining previous plantings. Wear sturdy work shoes and gardening gloves. •Sat., Oct. 20, 8 a.m.: Lake Casitas. Leader: John Pavelko, (805) 640-9040. Participants will watch for fall migrants. Meet outside the entrance to the lake. •Sat., Oct. 27, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.: Beginners Bird Walk at the Fillmore Fish Hatchery. Leader: Allen Bertke, (805) 640-9037. Probable sightings include several species of herons, egrets and other birds that come to feed. Bring binoculars, a field guide and water. •Fri., Nov. 2, 7:50 a.m. to noon: Point Mugu Naval Base. Reservations and a $10 deposit are required. Space is limited. Call Judy at (805) 642-0842 to reserve a space and for information about mailing in the payment.
