Summer learning program marks its 40th anniversary

The Camarillo Branch of the American Association of University Women is celebrating the 40th year of its summer enrichment program, Creative Arts Workshop.

Karen Allen, the director for many years, said this year's program is dedicated to Abbie Spellman, a former teacher in the Pleasant Valley School District and a Spontaneous Integrity Marine Biology Adventures teacher for the program.

The biology class centers on a floating sea lab to Anacapa Island. While on the boat, students collect plankton and watch a dolphin show. On the island, activities include a medicine wheel, a retelling of the Chumash Rainbow Bridge story, hiking and a talk with a diver.

The class is taught by Teri McDaniel and Joan Woodward.
