Police department Citizen's Academy accepting applications

The Camarillo Police Department will offer its 17th Citizen's Academy program from 6 to 9 p.m. for 12 weeks beginning Tues., Sept. 11 in the community room at the Camarillo Police Station.

The course is designed to give citizens an overview of the police department's function and operational procedures, according to a department spokesperson.

There will be presentations by a superior court judge, K-9 officer, SWAT team members, bomb squad, narcotic officers and others.

Participants will have the opportunity to meet Camarillo's station commander and get a tour of the police station.

There will be field trips to the main jail and juvenile hall, Sheriff's dispatch and the crime lab, the Sheriff's Training Academy and heliport. Participants will also go on a ride-along with a patrol deputy.

Applications for the academy are available at the Camarillo Police Station. Potential candidates must be at least 21 years old, live or work in the Camarillo area and have no felony convictions and no misdemeanor convictions within one year of applying.
