Wine tasting now a two-day event
By Michelle Knight knight@theacorn.com

PATRICK SHELBY/Acorn Newspapers CHARITABLE POUR- Kristi Davalos of Camarillo accepts a cold glass of chardonnay at last year's event.
What's old is new again for the 20th annual A Taste of Camarillo, scheduled at the Adolfo Camarillo Ranch House, July 28 and 29.

The Meadowlark Service League, an all-volunteer women's group that hosts the event, expanded it to two days and signed on a car dealership as their major sponsor.

Organizers said it was difficult for wine bidders to enjoy the rest of the festivities when it was just a one-day event.

The two-day festival will kick off with a live wine auction on Sat., July 28 and feature samplings from 45 restaurants and more than 100 wineries on Sun., July 29.

A Taste of Camarillo is the largest of the Meadowlark's three annual fundraisers. Event chair Mary Little said last year the event raised $159,000.

All three fundraisers enabled the philanthropic group to give 29 Ventura County charities their largest donation yet- more than $240,000. The money was distributed in June.

Little said the 40 or so Meadowlark members and their

spouses give their time and effort for the joy of helping local charities. The dozens of food and wine vendors also donate their wares, and the entertainers charge a reduced performance fee.

"It's just a win-win situation all the way around," Little said. "It's a great event- the best part of it is everyone has such a good time."

Little said festival attendees can feel good knowing that 80 percent of ticket sales benefit county charities. The rest of the money pays for festival expenses, such as building and equipment rentals, she said.

A two-day festival ticket costs $100.

Bruce Holley, marketing manager and community liaison for Jaguar Land Rover of Ventura, said some Meadowlark members approached him earlier this year about becoming a sponsor.

Holley, the owner, is a former Camarillo resident who wants to sponsor events that benefit the larger community rather than just a select few, Holley said.

"It's more about taking care of local people than advertising," Holley said.

The Camarillo Acorn is also a sponsor of the food and wine tasting event.
