Schools hire another interim superintendent
"Dr. Villegas exceeds the criteria, and we are fortunate to have a leader with his broad experience," board President Ron Speakman said. Villegas, who comes to Pleasant Valley after spending five years as superintendent of the Santa Paula Elementary School District, said he's always thought highly of the district. "There just seems to be many wonderful things happening, not just in the district but in Camarillo ... I wanted to be part of an active community," he said. "It's something I really enjoy and find rewarding." Villegas steps in two months after Ken Moffett, also hired as an interim superintendent, abruptly left the district. Shortly after being hired in September, Moffett advised the board that the district was operating too many underenrolled schools and recommended closing three. An advisory committee in February also gave the same recommendation. But in the months leading up to Moffett's departure, parents protested through public rallies and letter-writing campaigns and some kept their children out of school. Villegas said he did not retire from the Santa Paula school district as had been incorrectly reported, but had wished to make a change to a district characterized by progressive thinking and strong parent involvement. Previously, Villegas had spent 28 years teaching and in various administrative positions, including assistant superintendent and director of special education in a San Diego school district. He and his wife, Diane, have five children and five grandchildren. A reception to welcome Villegas will be held at city hall at the Thurs., July 19 board meeting. |
