Backyard fireworks a bad idea

The safest way to enjoy fireworks on July Fourth is at a professional public display, says the Ventura County Fire Department.

Fireworks are illegal in the cities of Camarillo, Moorpark, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and the unincorporated areas of Ventura County. Use or possession of fireworks could result in a fine of up to $1,000 and/or a jail term of up to a year.

Fireworks can cause wildfires, and the risk is especially high because of the drought and dry vegetation.

Anyone who starts a fire can be held liable for costs associated with fighting the fire and the related damages.

Injuries, mostly among children and young adults, are associated with the use of illegal fireworks, including sparklers.
