Red Cross to donate emergency kits

The American Red Cross of Ventura county will donate emergency kits to the local Mixteco community at 5 p.m. tomorrow, Sat., May 19 at the Harrington School, 2501 Gisler Ave., Oxnard.

The Mixteco community is comprised of indigenous Oaxacan immigrants, most of whom are farm workers, estimated to number 20,000 in Ventura County. Many speak neither English nor Spanish but only Mixteco. Thus, the people are linguistically, culturally and geographically isolated.

The presentation is made possible through a Ventura County Community Foundation grant that funded the employment of an Ameri-Corps member through the Red Cross to identify local vulnerable populations.
