UV radiation can harm the eyes

The same ultraviolet radiation that is damaging to the skin is equally detrimental to the eyes. Unprotected exposure to UV radiation can cause photokeratitis, which is a sunburn of the eyes marked by painful, red eyes and a sensitivity to light. The symptoms usually clear up quickly and cause no permanent damage.

But growing evidence suggests that long-term exposure to UV rays can lead to macular degeneration and cataracts, which can cause vision impairment or loss. Those susceptible to sun-related eye damage include those who spends long hours in the sun, persons with cataract surgery, those who have been diagnosed with certain retinal conditions, or those taking medications such as tetracycline, sulfa drugs, birth control pills, diuretics and tranquilizers.

Children are especially susceptible to eye damage form the sun as the lenses in their eyes do not block as much UV radiation as in adults.

Protect the eyes by limiting time in the sun, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, choosing contact lenses with UV protection and wearing sunglasses that filter 99 percent of UV rays.
