African embroidery on display at harbor Hundreds of African folklore embroidery designs will be on display from 1 to 5 p.m. Sun., Feb. 25 at Quilt Ventura, Harbor View Business Park, 4572 Telephone Road, St e . 908, Ventura. There is no charge to view the exhibition. Visitors will have the opportunity to view and judge the works in the display. Prizes will be awarded for adults and children in first, second and third place. During the past four years Leora Raikin, a South African native living in California, has taught the art of African folklore embroidery to more than 300 adults and children. Fourth-graders from JuanaMaria Elementary School will show their designs at this exhibit in honor of Black History Month. Joey St r a i t of Quilt Ventura, who learned the craft from Raikin, will teach a workshop on African folklore embroidery from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, The total cost is $10- $5 workshop fee and $5 kit fee. African folklore embroidery is affiliated with the AIDS charity KIDZPOSITIVE in Cape Town, South African. The organization enables HIVinfected women to support their families through the sale of handbeaded products. These items will be on sale at Quilt Ventura and a percentage of the Sunday sales will be donated to KIDZPOSITIVE. African folklore embroidery kits may be purchased at the store. |
