Berg chosen as district's 'Woman of the Year'
By Michelle Knight knight@theacorn.com

Sandra Berg
Pleasant Valley School District board member Sandra Berg was named by Assemblymember Audra Strickland (R-Westlake Village) as Woman of the Year of the 37th District.

Strickland said she nominated Berg because she's "tireless in her commitment and dedication" in the education of children.

"I think that makes her a perfect nominee for the 37th District. I'm very pleased to nominate her," Strickland said.

Berg said she was "incredibly honored" by the award.

"I'm flabbergasted," she said.

Berg said community activism, such as her role in unification- helping to bring high school students into the district- and developing relationships with other government entities, is probably what impressed Strickland.

Berg's commitment to Camarillo, however, extends beyond the schoolyard. She'd like to work with education and government agencies to bring more reasonably priced homes to Camarillo for the city's workforce of teachers, police officers and firefighters.

"Working together on projects, we can do great things," Berg said.

Along with the 79 other honorees, Berg will be celebrated in a March 5 ceremony in Sacramento. The group will also have lunch with California's first lady, Maria Shriver.

Berg's visit to the state capitol may coincide with a State Board of Education hearing on unification in Camarillo scheduled for March 7. State officials are expected to decide if they'll hear later this year an appeal from county residents who argue that unification would promote racial segregation at the local high schools.

The state board is scheduled to hear an appeal from the Oxnard Union High School District on the same issue in July.
