Children's grief support club forms

Camarillo Hospice will offer a children's grief support group called the Good Grief Club, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. beginning Wed., Feb. 28 at 400 Rosewood Ave., Ste. 102.

The group is for children between the ages of 7 and 10 who have lost an important person in their lives through death and will offer creative activities to help children express feelings, solve problems and learn new coping skills.

The club will be led by hospice counselor Becky Lowe, MA, who will be assisted by hospice volunteer Alyssa Whitaker.

Whitaker received counseling at the age of 10 after the sudden death of her father. She said that in grief counseling, "I could let out my feelings. There was someone to talk to." Now 20, Whitaker wants to help others through the mourning process.

Camarillo Hospice provides other free bereavement support groups for Ventura County residents, including general bereavement, young widows and widowers, and young adults. Camarillo Hospice also runs teenage grief groups at Camarillo, Rio Mesa, Oxnard and Pacifica high schools throughout the school year.

Individual and family grief counseling for children, teens and adults are also available free of charge through Camarillo Hospice.
