Electronic recycling collected free today, tomorrow

Free electronic equipment recycling will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and tomorrow at the Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E. Burnley St. No appointment is necessary.

Items accepted to be recycled are televisions, monitors, computers, printers, VCRs, DVD players, stereos, radios, cellphones and microwave ovens. A tax deduction is available for the fair market value of the items dropped off.

Residents and business operators with a large number of items to recycle can have these items collected free of charge by calling (805) 644-1214.

Participants may donate $2 for the handling and processing of the items collected. A portion of any donations received, along with recycling credits from the state, will be used to support the new Camarillo Library.

The event is sponsored by the Breakfast Rotary Club of Camarillo and the city of Camarillo.

Televisions and other electronic waste should not be disposed of in landfills because circuit boards, batteries and cathode ray tubes may contain hazardous materials such as lead, mercury and chromium. If improperly handled or disposed of, these toxins can be released into the environment.

For more information, call city recycling coordinator Roger Pichardo at (805) 3885392, or e-mail rpichardo@ci.camarillo.ca.us.
